Today on the 27th March 2017, Miguel Enriquez talented physician, political leader and philanthropist would have turned 73 years of age. In this moving tribute, Inès Enriquez his sister, pays homage to Miguel and imagines what he would have made of today’s Chile.

‘Miguel, my brother, it’s been 43 years since his departure. There are many messages honouring him, this is another one. It is difficult to imagine him in today’s native country, convulsed and torn by hate, conflict and excessive political ambition, unequal and arbitrary justice in charges of corruption, undeniable advances in human rights cases, with a dismembered left, atomised; which is actually many lefts manifested in a range of groups, postures, differences.
What would Miguel do in this context? Hard to say. I visualise his image in analysis, study, readings, contact with people, with the marginalised, peasants, workers, students, educators, academics and social and political representatives of their communities, seeking perhaps to form a broad front founded on a set of basic principles to reach goals that favour the great majorities and minorities immersed in dispossession and poverty, all meant to slow down the advance of the owners of capital and their scheme of exploitation and wealth. Easy to write in a few lines, an epic and titanic task in reality. I also see him laughing, raising a toast and dreaming. Go forth, Miguel, with all the strengths of history and the universe..’
